The Times Square of the West?

This past Saturday, Tami and I made a pit stop on our way to her brother's loft in downtown Los Angeles to check out the much-touted "LA Live" complex - situated at the north end of the Staples Center complex @ Figueroa & Olympic - which has been dubbed by many in the local press as the "Times Square of the West".

Ummm... nice, but no.

Because this...

...simply doesn't equate to this:

In fact, the only thing in the western US I can think of that's even remotely close to Times Square, in terms of scale and spectacle, would be the Strip in Las Vegas... and even that's a considerably different creature.

What LA Live is however is something that SoCal has a patented hammer-lock, a design model done better here than anywhere else in the country.

Locally, it's what's some call "shoppertainment" - the big overblown outdoor shopping/dining/nightlife areas that can be found just about everywhere around here (3rd St Promenade, the Hollywood & Highland complex, etc).

I'm all for seeing new development in downtown LA - there's been plenty of it in recent years - but one has to wonder if this neck of the woods *really* needs yet another gathering point like this. The investment put into this project would imply so but color me skeptical. The hipster crowd is hardly going to flock given the proximity to trendier LA areas nearby and, as mentioned, the general concept here is hardly a new one. The complex isn't quite a finished project either; only a few higher-end chain restaurants and bars open currently (no shops or clubs yet), making this largely a watering hole for Laker fans at the moment

Time will tell I suppose. As disjointed as Los Angeles is, it could certainly do with a true Times Square to help pull it together... but for now, this is hardly the spot.

To bail or not to bail?

That's the question that's been creeping around the back of my head as Congressional leaders met with the heads of the "Big Three" American automakers in DC this past week.

While I'd normally only watch C-SPAN to induce sleep, I found myself attentively following the proceedings a number of times over the past several days, debating the merits of the issue back and forth in my head while keeping Jack busy and attempting (largely in vain) to actually get some productive work done.

To put it bluntly, my initial thought was to let them fail. Sounds a bit harsh I'll admit but business in a capitalist society is built on a relatively simple foundation of survival of the fittest. Ultimately, it seems the American auto companies just don't have the teeth to really contend… so why should taxpayers keep the doors of presently failing businesses open?

On principle alone, I'm still inclined to say let them go. And yet I won't. I have a vested interest in this.

Letting the Big Three go under would put quite a few people out of work, adding further fuel to a fire that's already seen it's worst flames since the year I was born, and one of the people who could potentially lose their job as a result is my wife Tami. She, like millions of others, doesn't work directly for any of the Big Three but works in one of the countless related businesses that rely heavily on the auto industry for revenue. And having grown up in an old Midwestern manufacturing town, I've seen what happens first-hand (via close friends) when an industry packs up and moves away or shuts down altogether.

Should the worst happen, the saving grace for her is that she has a skill-set and resume with which she could easily find reliable employment elsewhere, though few with quite the same perks and amenities that she's fortunate enough to enjoy with her current job.

So naturally I'm a bit conflicted. As I write this, it seems that Congress has reached a tentative deal for the time being, but who can say what good that'll do in the long run. Given how out of step these manufacturers have been, it's hard to think that we're at the start of some miraculous comeback. Should we even bother?

It's been argued that it would be unfair to bail out the auto industry when Congress did just that on the banking/investment industry's behalf barely two months ago. After all, the Big Three is only asking for $34 billion, a mere fraction of the $700+ billion we doled out to the collective crumbling edifice that is Wall Street.

Frankly, it's an apples and oranges comparison IMO. Propping up a number of ailing manufacturing companies is a drop in the bucket when compared to the potential total halt of cash and credit through our economy as a whole. Let the banks fail and then see how easy it'd be for *anyone* to finance a home or a college education much less a new or used car.

I hate to be a pessimist, and for the sake of Tami's job (and the jobs of everyone else that relies on the industry) I hope I'm wrong but I can't help but think that we're just putting a Band-Aid on a major knife wound. One can hope that something positive comes out of this tentative auto bailout, but it's difficult sometimes to think that when considering the less-than-impressive resume the industry has had. I mean, people have raved about their old Toyota or their new Accord for years now. When's the last time you heard that about a Mustang or a Cavalier?

Air 81 LA on BPM (XM 81) - Final Show This Weekend! (11.08)

A quick note for the BPM listeners reading this...

As I'm sure many of you already know, XM and it's primary competitor Sirius are in the process of merging. Unfortunately my weekly mix will no longer be offered as part of BPM's weekly lineup.

I'd like to thank everyone who has tuned in to check out the weekly sets and for the kind words and feedback via email that I've been receiving from many of you for years now. I sincerely appreciate all of the support.

My thanks also go to the staff at BPM for allowing me the opportunity to play such great tunes on a truly national stage for the past four and half years, and extra special thanks to colleague and friend Alan Freed for bringing me into the fold in the first place.

My final Air 81 mixshow for BPM will air this upcoming weekend on 11.08 (late Friday night) @ 1 AM.

KNRJ Phoenix | 2002-2008

As some of you may know by now, Energy 92.7 & 101.1's dance-oriented format that broadcasts to the Phoenix area (as well as online) will be leaving the airwaves this coming Friday.

Being one of the few formats of its type on FM radio here in the US, this is obviously a bit of a blow to those of us who love and support this subset of music that's so rarely embraced by the mainstream airwaves. Sadly, KNRJ is hardly the first case of its sort in recent years - it joins the ranks of many a great radio station with similar formats that have all said farewell in recent years.

Such is the nature of radio though. It's a business, and like any business (especially in these tough economic times), it ultimately comes down to doing whatever is necessary to thrive. Formats come and go and change for any number of reasons, and those of us who work in this industry know that it's a possibility at any given moment.

My very first set for Energy aired on the last day of 2005 to help usher in the new year, and I've been grateful to be a part of Energy (and its sister station Mega) on Saturday nights ever since. To those of you who've tuned in locally or online to hear me do my thing, I'd like to say thanks for the support, feedback, input, and kind words over the past few years. I sincerely appreciate them all.

A special bit of thanks also goes out to Energy's long time mixshow coordinator/guru DJ Perry for bringing me on board in the first place. Very much obliged homie; we'll have to do it again sometime.

At four months...

Yep. It's already been that long. I can hardly believe it, but here's another round of random musings, thoughts, and observations from yours truly.

For starters…

He's big. No, really. BIG. Hauling him around in his car-seat is seriously toning up my left arm. It's one of the most absolutely clichéd things that parents have said for as long as any of us can probably remember but it's completely true – "they grow up so fast".

I mean, Jack's been outgrowing clothes almost from the time we brought him home from the hospital, but when I look at him now… he's just not so "little" anymore. He can hold his head up (and steadily at that) and he's already getting the hang of rolling over and such. He's almost outgrown his basonette (sp), and when I pick him up he just feels like he's actually got some weight to him.

He's out of that very first phase I suppose, that "brand spanking new" phase where he just seems so tiny and fragile. And the next phase he'll be coming into will undoubtedly be the same – lots of work with lots of reward.

I've been told by other parents that this stage of his first year is one of the most memorable, and even now as we're just getting into the thick of it I can see why that's true. The first inklings of his personality are really starting to take shape. He's found his voice and to hear him laugh is utterly flipping priceless. They said there's nothing more infectious than a child's laughter – man is that ever so true.

I'll take a moment here to count my blessings. Having a healthy child is all that I or my wife ever wanted in Jack, but we're fortunate to have an extra kicker – we, for the most part, have a "happy" baby. I've seen young kids who literally do nothing but scream and fuss their brains out every time that I see them. Not Jack. As I mentioned, he's quite the laugher and it doesn't take much to coerce a smile out of the kid. Hell, even if I just smile at him he'll smile right back more than half of the time.

Laughter and smiles aside, he's progressing along quite nicely… holding his head up nice and strong, following sound and movement and such, and he's slowly getting the hang of rolling over, sitting up, etc. He's still finding his hands and feet and it won't be long before the young lad is… (eek!) mobile. Dear oh dear. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

But you begin to see patterns and certain behaviors and such even at such a young age. It really is amazing. He has no idea he's doing it (consciously at least) but even now he knows how to pluck the parental strings when he wants to. I *know* when his fussing is for real and when it's just for show. Little stinker…

I'm told that teething is just around the corner… and that it can be a fate worse than death to deal with sometimes. Today was a banner day in the "let's fuss my brains out" department and I have the inkling that his first set of chompers may have a culprit. The doctor can confirm it for me later this week; I'm already armed to the teeth (pun intended) with the rings and such to remedy any issues the little man may encounter.

And even now, I still don't get much sleep. A typical day begins between 8 and 9 in the morning and ends (for me at least) somewhere around midnight. He keeps me on my toes during the day, giving me maybe an hour or two at the most to get any job-related work done. The majority of that I tackle after Tami and I swap roles when she gets home from work in the evening. It's tiring sometimes and even a tad stressful here and there, but everything worth getting done gets done in the end and we three make the most of our time together even when it's a bit on the fleeting side.

I wouldn't change a thing though. After all, I'm having nothing short of a blast… and I don't imagine that blast will be over any time soon.

Two months in...

It's hard to believe but two full months have already passed since my little man Jack first joined the world...

I'm happy to report that he and his mommy and daddy are all doing well. Naturally, Tami and I haven't slept much, but that's part of the drill... and we were certainly warned well in advance (though experiencing it is a *far* cry from simply being told about it).

There's countless little things in being a new dad that I could go on and on about at length, and I may very well do so at some point, but for now I'll simply say this:

I *love* being a dad.

And the devoted dads reading this will surely know of what I speak - in a sense, you really do have to experience it for yourself to really know just how amazing it is. But I've never felt as proud or accomplished or overjoyed at anything as I have in fatherhood. It takes so much out of you and yet it gives you twice as much back to you in return.

More ramblings and musings later. This dad has been taking his own dad, son, wife, and new stepmom to all the fun touristy places 'round LA this week with more to come. Time to grab some z's while Jack will let me...

Vinyl isn't dead... but what about the turntable?

In doing some legwork for a little pet project I took on recently, I did a number of fairly extensive image searches online recently, looking specifically for deejay-related event photos, booth setups, and stuff along those lines. And I noticed something that I found just a tad surprising.

In all of the photos that I came across, I rarely if ever saw an actual turntable in use.

Oh, don’t get me wrong; the omnipotent Technics 1200 was certainly in place in a vast majority of the club photos I unearthed. And yet what was once the very cornerstone of club culture seems to be little more than an obligatory nod to the past these days… a common relic in the museum that is the deejay booth, present only because it’s what you’d expect to find in such a place.

I’m not writing this little installment to bemoan the demise of vinyl or to weep over the turntable’s fall from favor in the age of digital deejaying solutions. I myself first began to incorporate CDs into my club and radio work well over a decade ago and I too have fallen prey to the mighty beast that is Serato. And contrary to this rant, the turntable *is* very much alive and well in certain arenas of dj culture (and not just among the turntablist crowd…)

But there’s just something about seeing all of these great photos of what appear to be great club nights with great deejays doing great things up there in the booth and NOT seeing a single turntable in action. True, they have their limits in comparison to the CDJs and digital setups of the modern era, but what the 1200 lacks in features or functions it more than makes up for in style.

I remember buying my first pair of beloved Technics clear back in 1990. Six long months spent toiling away in the kitchen of a Gold Star restaurant (what up to my Cincy peeps!) was well worth the payoff in the end as I packed those two big boxes into the trunk of my Celica and raced back home to get them setup and ready to go.

For as many hours as I logged on those damn decks, cutting and scratching and mixing away to my heart’s content, I could count any number of occasions where I would just sit there and stare at those things. Not only did they just *look* so damned cool, but I guess in a way… there was a sense of accomplishment that came with them, as if they said “you’re ready for that next level” to me every time I powered them up and got to work.

That’s not to say that modern deejay toys don’t have that same allure to them; all these years later and I still find myself oohing and aahing over the mound of new tech junk that hits the market every year. But few things are quite like the Technics 1200 turntable. In fact, they’ve hardly changed much since they first appeared in the early 70’s. Maybe that’s the appeal… that something so dated has managed to stay relevant all these years. Or maybe I’m just a pseudo-purist, reluctantly dragging each of his feet in opposite directions.

Or maybe it’s the notion that there’s a whole new generation of up and coming deejays these days who will never learn their craft or cut their teeth in the way that I did, a whole generation who (most likely) may never even lay their hands on actual vinyl... who’ll never learn how to balance a tonearm or wire a cartridge into a headshell or find the right type of wax paper to slip under their mat that’ll give them juuust that much less friction with the platter.

I dunno. Call me old-fashioned I suppose. More than anything else… well, I guess I just wish that I saw those turntables in those photos doing something more than holding an ashtray or a collection of empty Heineken bottles. They’re turntables damnit. They deserve more than that… y’know?
